Spa Day - Self Care

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that self care is key. Whether it’s reading a book, going on a walk, baking in the kitchen, taking a road trip, exercising… finding ways to take care of ourselves is so critically important. For me, my favorite way to take care of myself is a visit to the salon/spa for some papering.

I recently visited The Spa at Briarcliff for my first ever dermaplane facial! Per the experts, “dermaplaning removes the outermost layer of dead skin and vellus hair (peach fuzz)” and is great for fine lines and wrinkles. Bonus—it’s also super rejuvenating for the skin. I think we can all agree that mask-acne is a real problem none of us could have predicted, and my face/skin has been no exception. From new blemishes to incredibly dry skin, this more-than-your-basic-facial is exactly what I needed.

For some reason, I have always felt intimidated by dermaplaning. I think I worried that my skin was too sensitive, or that I would be super red afterwards, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. I found the experience incredibly relaxing (I also enjoy getting my eyebrows waxed ha!) and was comfortable the entire time. My favorite part was when my cosmetologist, Richelle, says, “You have a lot of texture.” I hadn’t even realized that the unevenness I had been feeling on my face, specifically around my cheeks/jawline, didn’t need to be there. More than a week later, my skin is still so incredibly soft and smooth. I’m beyond impressed with the difference in my skin since having the dermaplane facial.

But it wasn’t just the removal of the “texture” that was so rewarding. Richelle used multiple masks throughout the facial to really hydrate and clarify my skin, as well as clear out any blemishes. At the end of my treatment, Richelle also recommended products that would be great for my skin type + needs. Certainly no obligation to purchase, but I did snag the Image Skincare ORMEDIC balancing facial cleanser to use at home!

Though, I’ve had a few new blemishes since my facial (which is totally normal), I’m impressed with how few there have been. Overall, my skin looks brighter, healthier, and smoother. I cannot wait to go back for another treatment.

Speaking of going back—did you know that The Spa at Briarcliff has unique amenities no one else in Kansas City has (unless you travel to The Elms, that is)? That’s right. With every visit to the spa, you also have access to their three—yes, THREE—jetted pools with cascading waterfalls. Each pool is a different temperature, and the waterfalls can be turned on or off. Spend 30 minutes before or after your services transitioning between the climate controlled pools, which aids in muscle relaxation, improves circulation, and is completely complimentary with any service. Plus, the staff expect to return to their robe + slipper service very soon (COVID safety permitting), enhancing the experience even further.
